The first citizen minted the town's money

A currency that exists onchain and a currency a person actually holds are two different achievements, and only the second one counts. A few weeks ago we registered Röbel Münzen as a group currency on Gnosis, owned by the town's own multisig. This week the chain closed end to end: a verified citizen was invited, registered, and minted the first 48 Röbel Münzen. The town's money is now in a citizen's wallet.

What actually happened

In plain terms: an existing member vouched for the new citizen's wallet onchain, the citizen joined with one tap ("Bei Röbel Münzen mitmachen" in the app), and a welcome amount of 48 Röbel Münzen was issued to them. From that point on, a daily tap mints the civic dividend. No documents, no bank, no form. Membership is a human vouching for a human, and the money follows the credential.

Under the hood this rides on Circles, where being a verified human is what entitles you to mint. The thing Circles never solved on its own, stopping one person from registering a thousand fake humans, is exactly what Röbel's verified citizenship provides. So the first mint is not just a transaction. It is the proof that the two halves fit: a real, vouched-for person, and money only real people can make.

Three places you can already see it

The same currency now shows up across three surfaces. There is the citizen app, where a resident taps to collect their daily Röbel Münzen. There is an admin view, where the town can see who is verified, who is invited, and who is still outside. And there is a standalone Circles mini-app that draws the town's trust graph and lets a member invite the next one. One currency, three windows onto it.

The honest state

Being precise, because precision is the brand. The gate is the citizen credential, and it is now automatic: becoming a verified citizen, a holder of the town's credential, triggers an invitation into the currency on its own. There is no hand-maintained list. Verify a new resident and they are admitted to the money without anyone curating anything; the path from credential to currency runs by itself.

And the rollout is still early: only the first citizens have minted so far, and most of the town has yet to be verified at all. But the machine no longer needs a hand on it. Verify a resident and the invitation follows automatically, so widening the currency is a matter of verifying more of the town, not of onboarding each person one by one.

Why this is the milestone that matters

Everything before this was infrastructure: contracts deployed, keys handed to the town, a currency registered. Real work, but invisible to a resident. This is the first time a human earned money the town made, with no permission from anyone outside the town.

That is the first stage of the network-of-towns picture fully closed: one verified town, with real money in a real wallet. The next stage, towns trusting each other so value can move between them, only becomes a question worth asking once a single town's money actually works. Now it does.

Röbel is the first garden, and the first Röbel Münzen belong to a real person. That was always the test. The rest is scale.
